At Fonthill Marketplace Dental, we love it when our patients in Fonthill and Welland take an active interest in natural wellness. However, when it comes to lifting stubborn dark stains from your teeth, there is a massive difference between disrupting bacteria and removing pigment.
Can coconut oil really whiten your teeth?
Let’s break down the exact biochemistry of what happens when you pull with coconut oil.
The Saponification Process During Oil Pulling
When you swish coconut oil around your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes, the mechanical action, combined with your salivary enzymes, triggers a process called saponification. Saponification is essentially soap-making. The lauric acid in the coconut oil reacts with the alkaline substances in your saliva, creating a thin, soapy film. The film can effectively emulsify and trap fat-soluble oral bacteria, making it a decent tool for reducing bad breath.
Coconut Oil Won’t Whiten Teeth (Sorry!)
While saponification helps lift loose food particles, it lacks the mechanical or chemical power to detach bound pigments from enamel. Stains from items like blueberries or dark coffee form a chemical bond with the pellicle (the protein film on your teeth). Removing the stains requires either a mild, controlled dental abrasive or an oxygenating whitening agent.
The Danger of DIY Whitening Pastes
Because coconut oil alone doesn’t remove stains, many online blogs recommend mixing it with baking soda or activated charcoal to create a DIY whitening paste.
At Fonthill Marketplace Dental, we strongly advise against this. Activated charcoal is highly abrasive. Much like sandpaper, it permanently scratches and thins enamel. As the enamel thins, the yellow dentin underneath shows through more clearly, making your teeth look more yellow over time.
