A tooth extraction may sound intimidating, but with the right aftercare, you can heal quickly and comfortably. At Fonthill Marketplace Dental, we make sure patients are fully informed about the aftercare process. Here’s what you need to know about taking care of your smile after tooth removal.
Manage Bleeding
After the extraction, you’ll notice some bleeding. Bite down on the gauze provided, replacing it every 30-45 minutes until the bleeding stops. If it continues beyond a few hours, contact our office.
Reduce Swelling
Swelling is common after an extraction. Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek for 15-minute intervals during the first 24 hours to minimize inflammation. If needed, you can also take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication to address swelling and discomfort.
Hydration and Soft Foods
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, but avoid beverages like coffee or alcohol for the first day. Adding electrolytes to your water can help pack a hydration punch as well. Stick to a diet of soft foods such as soup, scrambled eggs, and smoothies (no straw!). Soft foods are easier on your mouth and won’t risk scraping your extraction site.
Take Prescribed Medications
If we’ve prescribed antibiotics or pain medication, take them exactly as directed. This will help prevent infection and manage discomfort.
Protect the Healing Site
It’s tempting to check on the area where the tooth was removed, but you should avoid touching the extraction area with your tongue or fingers. Disrupting the clot can lead to complications, including dry sockets or infection.
Gradual Return to Normal
After 2-3 days, you can begin introducing firmer foods and gently brushing near the extraction site. Following your dentist’s instructions, you’ll return to normal in no time.
